THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF VICTORY IN EUROPE AND VICTORY IN THE PACIFIC TWO-COIN SET

When  the guns fell silent over Europe on 8th May 1945, VE Day was born. After years of carnage and destruction - resulting in millions of lives being lost - the Nazi scourge had finally been crushed, the war in Europe was over and the celebrations began. In London alone over 2 million people took to the streets in Trafalgar Square and up the Mall to Buckingham Palace – cheering and singing as King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and Sir Winston Churchill  appeared on the balcony to wave at the ecstatic people below.

Whilst celebrations continued in Europe, thousands of Australian service personnel continued to fight in the Pacific - battling tropical diseases and infections as they fought hand-to-hand through jungle after jungle. As the Japanese pursued  their plan to invade the most prosperous countries of Asia for their natural resources, the spirit and resilience of  the Australian and New Zealand forces would be relied upon, once again by the free world. The battles of The Coral Sea, Midway, Milne, the Huon Peninsula and the travails, suffering, torture and terror of Kokoda and The Burma Railway are deeply memorialised sites of some of the most defining military moments in Australian history. After America dropped two atomic bombs on Japan – forcing their acceptance of the terms of the Potsdam Declaration – and their total surrender,  crowds of Australians  descended onto the streets in celebration - shouting, singing, dancing, lighting bonfires and letting off fireworks – whilst King George VI addressed the entire Commonwealth in a  broadcast from Buckingham Palace.
