THEY WERE ONLY CHILDREN

The Lost Boys of Gallipoli Silver 5 Crowns Commemorative Coin

Singular amongst all of the tragedies of WWI, was that thousands of young boys from Australia and New Zealand were so eager to join up and ‘do the right thing’ that they lied about their age and falsified parental consent forms to enlist as an ANZAC. As we are now all too aware, rather than fulfilling their naïve heroic dreams, they were met with a wave of enemy bullets on far away beaches  - finding nothing but death, injury, pain and disease.

Suddenly under shot and shell at the ill-fated shores of Gallipoli, many boys succumbed immediately on the rugged ridges and dangerous gullies, where most would never emerge from and would remain there forever. The exact number of these underaged heroes has been impossible to determine, but suffice to say countless were killed in the heat of battle or died from wounds or long-term effects. The youngest known was only 14 years of age -  just one amongst a legion, who were well under the permitted age of 21 - and only a handful are known to us, whose photos and details were found and made available.

All the Lost Boys of Gallipoli who fought and fell are represented on this Silver Five Crowns commemorative coin by a group of just six, who were known to have died in  battle.

The poignancy of their selfless sacrifice reflected in the finely etched engraving of their details, which serves to highlight both their sheer youth and innocence. Beneath the looming shadow of the fate that awaited them, their courage and eagerness to serve are also clearly shown as they charge across the battlefield into the jaws of death.  The solemn statement ‘Lest We Forget’ salutes their young, eager courage as they run dauntlessly to face the foe, whilst above reads their sad fate, ‘They Remain Forever Young’.
