‘70th Anniversary Royal Tour of Australia Commemorative Coin’

When Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II stepped ashore at Farm Cove, Sydney from the SS Gothic on 3rd February 1954, she became the first and only reigning British Sovereign to ever set foot on Australian soil. The response was passionately patriotic, with an estimated one million people from Sydney alone (at the time a population of just over 1.8 million) lining the foreshore to catch a brief glimpse of their beloved Queen. The Sydney Morning Herald described their welcome as ‘tumultuous’, with those who could not make it to vantage points listening in to the comprehensive, nation-wide radio coverage.

An event that had been in the planning since 1949, but abandoned after the death of King George VI (Elizabeth’s father), Australia was delighted when it was announced that his daughter - the then Princess Elizabeth and her husband - would take his place. The tour was a whirlwind affair, with 57 towns and cities visited over the 58-day tour and before email, facsimile and mobile phones existed, was extraordinarily well planned and executed. The Royal couple travelled the country via various modes of transport - car, plane and train – with the eager lining the rail tracks as the royal train sped by – images of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip waving from the balcony of the rear carriage – forming firm memories for thousands of affectionate Royal supporters.

In honour of the famous and much-loved wattle yellow dress designed by Norman Hartnell and immortalised in the ‘wattle painting’ by Australian artist Sir William Dargie the tour became widely known as the ‘Wattle Tour’. By the time the SS Gothic departed on the 1st April 1954, the charm, serenity and sheer majesty of the Queen had been implanted for all time in the Australian psyche. In honour of this tour, The Bradford Mint is proud to offer all royal collectors this exclusive ‘70th Anniversary Royal Tour of Australia Commemorative Coin’.
