The Royal House of Windsor

Silver Proof Coin Set

On 15 March 1917, Emperor Nicholas II of Russia was forced to abdicate – raising the spectre of the eventual abolition of all the monarchies in Europe. In light of this and the fierce anti-German sentiments amongst its people, King George and his family were persuaded to abandon all titles held under their original German Crown and to change any German titles and house names to anglicised versions. George V also restricted the use of British princely titles to his nearest relations and in 1919, he stripped three of them of their British titles under the Titles Deprivation Act 1917. On 17 July 1917, a royal proclamation declared: ‘’… from the date of this Our Royal Proclamation Our House and Family shall be styled and known as the House and Family of Windsor…’’. A dynasty was born.

However, due to anti-German sentiment in Britain during WWI, King George V issued a proclamation, whereby he changed this Germanic nomenclature – announcing that from on 17th July 1917, the royal family would be known as The House of Windsor. It remains the family name of the current Royal Family. Since then, the, kings and queens of the United Kingdom have fulfilled the varied duties of constitutional monarchy. One of their most important roles has been acting as national figureheads lifting public morale during the devastating wars of 1914-18 and 1939-45. With the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, King Charles III acceded to the throne, and in so doing, became the firth monarch in the House of Windsor lineage. There is a custom that with each change of monarch, the coinage effigy changes orientation. Edward VIII broke with that tradition, believing h As the main body of text is on your website, I think it’s fine – is left side to be better suited to his coin portrait. His abdication rocked the very foundations of the nation and in a bid to re-instil a sense of order and continuity, King George VI retained the tradition – choosing to also face left. When Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II acceded to the throne, she chose to face right – in keeping with her love and belief in tradition. For seventy years, that orientation persisted and became so familiar to us all. Until King Charles III acceded following the death of his mother. Charles chose to preserve the tradition of alternating coinage effigies and he therefore faces left on both the obverse and reverse.
