‘HER LATE MAJESTY’S SILVER JUBILEE TOUR ONE OUNCE COMMEMORATIVE’
In March 1977, Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh returned to Australia to celebrate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee, marking 25 years since her accession to the throne. The tour took place between 7 and 30 March and included visits to all capital cities as well as a number of regional centres, including Launceston and Tamworth, allowing Australians from across the country to participate in the historic celebrations.
The visit featured a series of significant ceremonial events, including the laying of a wreath at the Australian War Memorial and the State Opening of Parliament in Canberra. Throughout the tour, large crowds gathered to greet the royal couple, with thousands of schoolchildren lining streets and public spaces, while Australia Post issued commemorative stamps to mark the occasion.
One of the most notable features of the Jubilee visit was the Royal Silver Jubilee Exhibition Train, a travelling museum showcasing more than 700 years of British history. The train visited 26 locations nationwide, bringing the story of the monarchy directly to communities across Australia. During the tour, The Queen remarked upon the enduring warmth and loyalty of the Australian people, sentiments reflected in the widespread community spirit that defined the Jubilee celebrations.
