‘HER LATE MAJESTY’S AUSTRALIAN BICENTENARY TOUR TWO OUNCE COMMEMORATIVE’

In 1988, Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh returned to Australia as part of the nation’s Bicentenary celebrations, marking 200 years since European settlement. The visit included a series of major national events, beginning on 30 April with the opening of World Expo in Brisbane, followed by the official opening of the new permanent Parliament House in Canberra on 9 May.

The Bicentenary tour was notable for the presence of the wider Royal Family, with several members attending events across the country, reflecting the significance of the occasion. While the celebrations were marked by widespread public enthusiasm, the visit also coincided with significant Aboriginal protests, drawing attention to the impact of colonisation and the ongoing struggle for recognition and land rights. During the tour, the royal couple participated in a number of engagements acknowledging Indigenous culture and heritage.

Despite the complexity of the moment, The Queen received warm and enthusiastic welcomes throughout Australia, with large crowds gathering in cities and regional centres alike. The Bicentenary visit became one of the most prominent royal tours in Australian history, symbolising both reflection on the past and the evolving identity of the nation.
