Property Description

These highly-collectable coins are from an exclusive range that features Martin Jennings' crowned portrait of His Majesty the King, crowned on 6 May 2023 at Westminster Abbey. This limited-edition coronation gold sovereign is the perfect way to commemorate this historic occasion.

Depicting King Charles III wearing a crown - the first in over a 200-year history to show a crowned male British Monarch, the coins were specially produced to celebrate the coronation. From next year, King Charles will again appear uncrowned on his coinage, meaning this particular coin is worthy of special place in any sovereign collection.

While the obverse of this gold Sovereign is a one-off, the reverse is a different matter altogether in that it features the classic Saint George and the dragon motif by Benedetto Pistrucci, seen on many of these coins over the centuries.

Sovereigns have been struck to the same specification since 1817 - each piece measuring 22.05 millimetres from milled edge to milled edge and composed of exactly 7.98 grams of 22-carat solid gold.

This 2023 Sovereign is struck in proof finish - achieved with multiple strikes of hand-prepared dies - are authorised for distribution worldwide with just 15,000 being minted in Proof quality.

This is a reasonably small number when you compare it with Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee (50th Anniversary) Proof sovereign in 2002, which had a mintage of 19,447 - almost 25% larger. It too featured a one-year-only design and may explain why the new 2023 Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III Proof Sovereign sold out entirely at the mint.

However, we are delighted to say we have a small allocation of these coins available for our discerning collectors – available in the official luxury case of issue and with an individually numbered certificate of authenticity.
