PROCLAMATION ERA AUSTRALIAN GOLD AND SILVER COINS
These ‘Proclamation’ coins were authorised by Governor King in 1800 to remedy a severe shortage of currency in early New South Wales. Bearing the image of King George III and given inflated values to keep them in circulation, they were declared as legal tender within the colony. This silver shilling and sixpence from 1787 feature a laureate and bust of King George III on the obverse and the Hanoverian shield on the reverse./ We are also pleased to have available a small selection of 22-carat gold, one-third guineas which is a value ONLY ever struck by King George III, and ONLY from 1797 to 1813. The gold guinea was specifically mentioned in Governor King’s Proclamation of 1800, and almost all of those in circulation in Australia, would have arrived in the pockets of wealthy settlers. The Bradford Mint is delighted to be able to offer these early representations of Australia’s tenuous monetary system.
