‘HONOURING ALL VIETNAM VETERANS COMMEMORATIVE COIN SET’

Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War began in 1962, as part of a commitment to support South Vietnam and stem the spread of communism in Southeast Asia. Over the next decade, more than 60,000 Australian service personnel – soldiers, sailors, airmen, medics, and support staff – served in a conflict that tested the limits of endurance, loyalty, and sacrifice.

For the Australians who answered the call, there was pride in serving their country and upholding the ANZAC tradition. Despite harsh conditions, guerrilla warfare, and the uncertainties of combat, the men and women of Australia’s armed forces carried themselves with distinction, reflecting the nation’s steadfast values and dedication.

From the first deployment of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam in 1962, to the arrival of the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment at Vung Tau, Australians demonstrated unwavering commitment. Tasked with defending allies and supporting South Vietnamese forces, every patrol, convoy, and operation embodied the call of duty to both nation and comrades.

Heroism marked the service of Australians in battles such as Long Tan, Coral, Balmoral, and Binh Bah. Facing overwhelming odds, troops displayed extraordinary courage under fire, often risking life and limb to protect one another and achieve their objectives. Their actions earned respect at home and abroad, reinforcing the enduring legend of the ANZAC.

In the jungles, villages, and bases of Vietnam, mateship forged bonds that could not be broken by heat, danger, or fear. Soldiers relied on each other for survival, support, and companionship. It was this camaraderie – the unwavering loyalty between friends – that became a defining feature of Australia’s military effort.

Courage was shown not only on the battlefield but in the face of adversity at home. Returning veterans endured public hostility, protests, and indifference, yet persevered with resilience. Their courage extended beyond combat, inspiring generations to value commitment, service, and sacrifice.

Today, the Vietnam War veterans hold a special place in Australia’s history. Their service and sacrifice are honoured and remembered. This coin set pays tribute to their extraordinary efforts, ensuring that pride, duty, valour, mateship, courage, and respect endure as guiding principles of the nation they served.
