About this coin
Behind each Dead Man’s Penny - also referred to as the Widow’s Penny - lies a story of young life lost and the accompanying anguish family and friends were left to grieve and regret. A memorial issued to the families of soldiers of the British Empire who were killed in battle during the first world war, the original round bronze Memorial Plaque was 120mm in diameter and bore the inscription: ‘He died for freedom and honour’ – an all-male citation that was later adjusted to recognise those brave females, who were also killed in the ferocious fight for the freedoms we enjoy today. The full name of each dead soldier was engraved on the right-hand side of the plaque - with no rank, unit or decorations shown - befitting the equality of the sacrifice made by all casualties. Symbolically, the original featured an image of Lady Britannia surrounded by two dolphins (representing Britain’s naval prowess ) and a lion (representing the heart of Britain) standing over a defeated eagle, which represented the defeated, diminished and depleted Germany. This exclusive silver commemorative coin from The Bradford Mint pays respect to the original bronze memorial given to the next-of-kin of the men and women of the Allies, who died during World War I. Exquisitely crafted to the highest numismatic standards, the reverse replicates the grandeur of the original design showing Lady Britannia, holding out an olive wreath, flanked by dolphins and a lion standing over a defeated eagle. The memorial rectangle - formerly bearing the name of the fallen - now bears the pledge, ‘Lest We Forget’ whilst the circumference tribute now shows the inclusive citation, ‘They died for our freedom and honour’. The obverse shows the effigy of King Charles III - a grandson of the monarch who was the signatory of the original scroll that accompanied each of these memorial plaques. An impressive 65mm in diameter, this finely and flawlessly detailed silver commemorative coin, is a fitting reminder of more than a million plaques issued after the war that was supposed to end all wars, - but sadly didn’t - and in following years to commemorate former British Commonwealth soldiers, sailors and nurses who later died through having served. In today’s troubled times it is especially appropriate for us all to recall and respect those whose ultimate sacrifice gave us the many freedoms we are privileged to enjoy. All the more reason to truly treasure this remarkable silver commemorative coin, created with appropriate reverence and respect for our discerning collectors. Lest We Forget.
