‘BIRTH OF THE ANZAC LEGEND .999 SILVER COMMEMORATIVE SET'

Early on the morning of 25 April 1915, Allied forces landed on the Gallipoli peninsula in Ottoman Türkiye. This marked the start of the Gallipoli Campaign - a land-based element of a broad strategy to defeat the Ottoman Empire. Over 8 months, the Australian and New Zealand forces advanced little further than the positions they had taken on that first day of the landings and by late December were evacuated from the peninsula - the battles fought on Gallipoli establishing the military reputation and legend we know today.
At Gallipoli the Anzacs helped shape this truly unique Australian story, when some 16,000 soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed under fire on the shores of Gallipoli. Part of a hastily planned series of landings by a British Empire Force of 75,000, The Anzacs joined troops from Britain, Ireland and India, as well as from France and her dominions in an effort to defeat the Ottoman Empire. Things quickly went wrong for the ANZAC forces after the Gallipoli landing on 25 April 1915. Turkish resistance was immediate, fierce and persistent.
