‘THE TEN POUND POMS HALF OUNCE .999 SILVER COMMEMORATIVE'

For many assisted migrants, the journey to Australia became a defining chapter of hope and anticipation. Families departed Britain aboard the great passenger liners of the P&O and Orient Lines — Oriana, Strathaird, Arcadia, Fairsea and Fairsky — as crowds gathered on the docks to say farewell. Laughter and tears mixed as bands played Auld Lang Syne, marking the beginning of a journey that would change lives forever.

Life at sea soon settled into a routine. Children explored the decks, friendships were formed, and letters were written home as the weeks passed. As the ships crossed the equator, warmer air replaced the chill of Europe, offering a first glimpse of the lifestyle many believed awaited them. At night, unfamiliar constellations filled the sky, and the Southern Cross appeared — the stars which shine over Australia, guiding migrants toward a new home.

Not all arrivals came by sea. By the 1960s, advances in aviation reduced the six-week voyage to just a few days. Qantas and BOAC aircraft carried families across hemispheres, their arrival marked by the blast of warm air and the scent of eucalyptus as cabin doors opened on Australian soil.

Whether by ship or by air, arrival was unforgettable. The coastline of Fremantle, the outline of Sydney Heads, or the sprawl of Melbourne seen from above confirmed that the dream was real. These shared journeys forged a lasting sense of camaraderie among migrants who had once been strangers.

In the aftermath of World War II, Australia was a nation with a small population and a workforce depleted by loss and injury. The Ten Pound Poms became central to the country’s post-war transformation, helping to build the industries, communities, and modern Australia we know today.
