‘THE TEN POUND POMS TWO OUNCE .999 SILVER COMMEMORATIVE'

The Ten Pound Poms did more than address labour shortages or populate expanding suburbs. Their arrival marked a profound shift in the social and cultural development of post-war Australia, contributing directly to the foundations of the modern nation.

By the late 1970s, the country they had helped shape bore little resemblance to the Australia they first encountered. Rural paddocks had become residential estates, while new schools, hospitals, and transport networks supported rapidly growing communities. The children of assisted migrants grew up identifying not as newcomers, but as Australians — raised in a society their parents had helped to build.

As immigration policies evolved and restrictions based on race were gradually dismantled, British migrants were joined by large numbers of Europeans. Italians, Greeks, Dutch, Germans, Irish, and Maltese arrived in significant numbers, each bringing their own languages, traditions, skills, and cultural practices. Together, these communities transformed post-war Australia into an increasingly diverse and multicultural society.

While cultural differences remained, the underlying motivations were shared. All sought stability, opportunity, and the chance to establish a better life. Their collective contribution reshaped Australia’s cities, industries, and social identity, leaving lasting influence on everything from food and architecture to education and community life.

In 1973, the cost of assisted passage increased to £75, effectively ending the era of the Ten Pound Poms. The broader Assisted Passage Migration Scheme, however, continued until 1982. By its conclusion, more than one million British migrants — alongside hundreds of thousands of Europeans — had settled in Australia, making it one of the largest and most successful peacetime migration programs in modern history.

Today, the descendants of those early migrants are embedded across all levels of Australian society. As professionals, tradespeople, artists, and leaders, they represent generations who arrived with little but ambition and resilience. Their legacy is one of belonging — a nation shaped not by origin, but by shared effort, contribution, and the enduring pursuit of a better future.
