On the 16th July 1969 the start of a history making event was enfolding – Apollo 11 was launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. A spaceflight that saw Apollo Lunar Module Eagle land on the moon four days later on July 20, 1969, at 20:17 UTC. Having touched down on the moon’s Sea of Tranquillity, the Space Center in Houston was notified with the historic words “The Eagle has landed.”

Six hours after landing on July 21 at 02:56:15 UTC, Commander Neil Armstrong took his first steps on the lunar surface making the famous statement “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. With its direct link to the Apollo 11 Mission, it is particularly apt that this unique ultra-high relief fine silver coin is being released on behalf of Ascension Island.

Devil’s Ashpit on the eastern side of Ascension Island made a perfect site to build a NASA tracking station. With volcanic peaks surrounding the site it provided a natural shield against radar and other interference from elsewhere on the island.

Originally constructed in 1965 to support the earlier Surveyor missions, it also supported the later deep space and Apollo manned missions and tracked Apollo 11 on its flight from Earth to the Moon.

This coin recreates this momentous occasion and includes the official NASA logo and the APOLLO 11 crew patch for which special permission has been granted for use on this coin. There is a strict worldwide edition limit of 650 for this historical piece that is struck in 2 troy ounces (62.21g) of fine silver. With a limited allocation being made to Australia this will see these pieces launch out the door – so call now to secure yours!
